Our own West Bradford Township building is heated and cooled via a geothermal system! Geothermal or "geo-exchange" HVAC systems circulate liquid through underground pipes in order to take advantage of the constant temperature just beneath the soil surface. (There are other forms of geothermal, such as using the earth’s steam, as Iceland does,)

Quiet geothermal systems save you a lot of money over their lifetimes, as well as being cheaper to run, since they use pre-existent heating/cooling from the ground. The main challenge is the upfront cost of digging the well. The pump is powered by electricity, so make sure you have renewable power supplying it by installing solar or by switching your electricity provider.

West Bradford resident Jim M. installed a geothermal system
in his home in 2009.  "We power our geothermal system with
100% renewable electricity.  It's quiet and needs service only
every few years - we've never had a problem with it."
