Broad Run Invasive Removal

On a recent misty December morning, the West Bradford Township Land Preservation and Sustainability Committee (LP&SC) gathered to begin removing invasive non-native vegetation from Broad Run Park.
The event out brought volunteers from Scout Troop 19, a National Junior Honor Society member Jared DeRoba, and other residents. The morning began with an introduction from Lyle Frederick, member of
the LP&SC, about the importance of removing plants such as honeysuckle, summer grape vine, and oriental bittersweet that overrun native vegetation and destroy wooded areas. He then directed attention to
the evergreens on the west edge of the park that were becoming strangled by these invasives.

After coffee and delicious apple cider donuts donated by Marsha Hodge of the LP&SC, the group sprang into action, identified what to remove, and used chainsaws, loppers, and other implements of destruction to free the trees. After a few hours of hard work, the group cleared the bases of a dozen evergreens that now can breathe a whole lot easier. Please help control invasives by not planting them and removing any from your property. Other invasives include burning bush, autumn olive, and Japanese barberry. Learn more at the LP&SC’s webpage.

In addition to saving existing trees, members of Troop 19 planted a native serviceberry (also called Juneberry) near the sheltered bench for generations to enjoy for years to come under the direction of
LP&SC members Marsha Hodge and Amy Johnston. This planting also aids the Township’s efforts to become a “Tree City, USA” Community in the new year.

All and all, it was an incredible day of service and a great opportunity for the community. Stay tuned for upcoming invasive removal events and other activities conducted by the West Bradford Township Land
Preservation and Sustainability Committee. The Committee meets at 7:00PM on the first Monday of the month in the Township Building.
