Reduce food waste

The United States throws away 30% of its edible food. Food waste costs both residents and municipalities, because it needs to be hauled to a landfill. Additionally, this represents waste of the energy and other resources needed to produce this food. To save food, money, and resources, use these tips to reduce food waste:

  • Plan before you shop to avoid impulse buys
  • Only buy what you need
  • Plan when you’ll eat leftovers
  • Freeze extras – you can freeze everything from sauce to vegetables to grains
  • Place food where you will see it so you’ll use it
  • Use scraps – for example, you can make stock out of potato peels and other fresh vegetables
  • Compost instead of throwing produce away: read more about composting here!
