A reminder about signs in the township
Codes Corner

The West Bradford Township Zoning Ordinance regulates the size and placement of different types of signs that may be installed in the Township.  There are many types of signs, and each serves a different purpose or function.  According to the Township’s Ordinance, the purpose of the regulations is to promote the safety of persons and property by providing that signs do not create traffic hazards by distracting or confusing motorists, or impairing motorists' ability to see pedestrians, other vehicles, obstacles or to read traffic signs. Regulating signs also minimizes clutter, unsightliness, and confusion.

Signs are classified by use, construction, and design.  The placement of each type of sign is also regulated and at no time is a sign, other than an official sign, permitted to be attached to traffic signs, public utility poles, or trees within the right-of-way of any street or placed on or in any roundabout, traffic island or other traffic-calming feature.  Because signage is protected by the First Amendment right to free speech, signs cannot be regulated based on their content.

Most signs require a zoning permit to ensure that they meet all Township requirements.  There are, however, certain signs that do not require permits or approval from the Township such as professional or address signs, real estate signs, identification signs, and temporary signs which include election signs that are posted on your own property.

All of the Township’s sign regulations can be found in the Township Code of Ordinance, Section 450-69, which is available on our website at www.westbradford.org. If you find the Ordinances difficult to navigate, please do not hesitate to contact us directly, and the Township staff will be glad to assist you.
