Have you ever wondered why we cannot place refrigerated appliances into the trash? This is because the refrigerant contained in each unit is harmful to the Ozone layer. Each type of refrigerant has its own rating of Global Warming Potential (GWP) and Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP).
While refrigerants used in new appliances have a much lower GWP and ODP, the older, more harmful refrigerants are still prevalent at the disposal end of refrigerated appliances.
There are many types of refrigerants used throughout the world, but the four most commonly collected for disposal in West Bradford are R134a, R410a, R-22 and R-12. These refrigerants are used in home refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, water coolers and dehumidifiers.
After West Bradford’s Refuse Department collects your refrigerated unit it is stored and separated by refrigerant type. Evacuation of refrigerant takes place at the Municipal Campus and each evacuated unit is then recycled. Once our storage tanks are full, they are taken to our local refrigeration supplier to be disposed of.
