The United States throws away 30% of its edible food. Food waste costs both residents and municipalities because it needs to be hauled to a landfill. Additionally, this represents a waste of the energy and other resources needed to produce this food. To save food, money, and resources, use these tips to reduce food waste:
- Plan before you shop to avoid impulse buys
- Only buy what you need
- Plan when you'll eat leftovers
- Freeze extras - you can freeze everything from sauce to vegetables to grains
- Place food where you will see it so you'll use it
- Use scraps - for example, you can make stock out of potato peels and other fresh vegetables
